aquarian-jd14-jack-dejohnette-14-sablee-13034
JD14 - Jack Dejohnette 14" Sanded

Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

Sanded heads are a historical standard for drummers seeking rich articulation with brushes and a less aggressive attack than a clear head. In black version, this head offers a distinctive aesthetic and a playing feel often perceived as more "settled," while staying true to the spirit of coated heads intended for sensitive and expressive snare drums.

Who This Drum/Instrument Is For

This snare drumhead is aimed at beginner to advanced drummers who want to work on control and dynamics, especially in brush playing. It is well suited for jazz, swing, bossa, soul, soft pop contexts, as well as any situation where a more matte, less bright snare sound that is easier to place in the mix is desired.

Features and Innovations

The sanded surface provides the necessary grip to draw regular circles and achieve a consistent swishing sound with brushes, while helping to control unwanted overtones. The black finish enhances the instrument's visual character, particularly appreciated in stage or studio setups where aesthetics matter as much as sonic coherence.

Sound Characteristics

On a snare drum, a sanded head tends to produce a softer attack and a warmer timbre than a clear head, with generally more controlled sustain. The sound emphasizes the body of the note and texture, highlighting ghost notes and subtle dynamics.

With brushes, the sanded grain provides a precise response and clearer articulation, ideal for nuances and crescendos. With sticks, it delivers solid definition without excessive brightness, helping the snare remain musical at moderate volume.

Technical specifications

<colgroup><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"></colgroup>

Category

Snare drum

Diameter

14 "

Head finish

Coated

Color

Black

Shaping

Single Ply

<colgroup><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"></colgroup>

Type

snare drumhead

Recommended use

brush playing

Finish

sanded

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0984/0872/6803/files/0d6f72db25248ebdc531d636f303d5b562cdbe55_AQUARIAN_JACK_DEJOHNETTE.jpg?v=1792666769
