blackstar-st-james-100-head-reconditionne-430633
ST. JAMES 100 Head - Refurbished

The flagship of the St. James range

The St. James series was born at Blackstar with a strong idea: to preserve the touch, dynamics and personality of a tube amp while drastically reducing its size and weight. The first models in the range established this philosophy in the 50-watt arena; the St. James 100 Head takes its DNA and brings it to a more ambitious, more complete head designed with professional setups in mind.

Within the Blackstar range, this model clearly stands out as a premium head for demanding guitarists: more power, more channels, an original power amp section combining 6L6 and EL34 tubes, and modern direct integration that goes beyond the logic of a simple head connected to a speaker cabinet. The result is an amp that retains the traditional spirit of an all-tube design while fully embracing today’s applications.

A head designed for both stage and studio guitarists

The Blackstar St. James 100 Head is primarily aimed at advanced intermediate, experienced and professional musicians looking for a main amp capable of handling everything: intense rehearsals, gigs, home-studio recording and more demanding studio sessions. Its 100 watts provide plenty of headroom, while the variable power reduction makes it possible to achieve a more manageable feel at lower volume.

Its natural territory ranges from rock to hard rock, with genuine ease in modern metal styles, but its Clean and Crunch channels also make it highly relevant for guitarists who like to build their sound with pedals, explore more vintage textures or switch between tight rhythm parts and singing leads within the same set.

Four channels, complete control and a truly modern approach

The strength of this head lies first and foremost in its immediate versatility. The four footswitchable channels offer a coherent progression from clean tones to the densest overdrive. The amp features a 3-band EQ, built-in reverb, variable power reduction down to the equivalent of 5 watts, as well as a 3-position “Cut” selector designed to fine-tune the top end, from the most incisive setting to the smoothest.

These features are joined by an integrated reactive load and the IR-based CabRig DSP system, which is particularly useful for delivering a virtually miked amp sound without placing a microphone in front of a speaker cabinet. For today’s guitarist, this is a real time-saver both on stage and in the studio. The series or parallel effects loop with level selector, USB audio output, balanced XLR output, adjustable solo boost and automatic universal power supply further reinforce this highly practical approach.

A lively tube tone, expansive cleans and formidable overdrive

Despite its featherweight design and advanced features, the St. James 100 Head remains, above all, a genuine tube head. It delivers everything guitarists expect from this type of format: a firm attack, dynamic response under the fingers, natural compression when the amp is pushed and a sense of air in both the clean and crunch registers. Its power reserves allow it to remain solid and articulate, even in a dense band mix or at high volume.

In practice, the 6L6 section suggests broader, tighter sounds, while the EL34 leans toward a more biting, more British midrange ; this is a logical interpretation of the official tube configuration, and precisely what makes the amp so appealing. The referenced demonstrations featuring John Browne of Monuments also point toward modern, tight, precise and highly articulate textures, ideal for contemporary metal and prog, without restricting the amp to a single style. This conclusion regarding its tonal direction is an inference based on specialist demos and the product descriptions.

Technical specifications

<colgroup><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"></colgroup>

Power

100 watts

Weight

10 kg

Preamp tubes

3 x ECC83

Dimensions

495 x 241 x 228 mm

Power tubes

2 x 6L6 and 2 x EL34

Finishing

Black

3-band EQ

Bass, Middle, Treble

Warranty

3 years

Cabinet load compatibility

8, 16 and 32 ohms

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0984/0872/6803/files/986fdce7bbb6ee827a8403f98a5045ba21a7ae8e_ADAGIO_717755.jpg?v=1791480611
