buffet-crampon-serie-400-verni-bc8403-1-0-33706
400 SERIES

Serie 400: The French Spirit of Buffet Crampon, Between Tradition and Modern Innovations

With the Serie 400, Buffet Crampon offers a baritone saxophone that embraces the codes of classic French design while integrating modern design choices to provide an instrument that is both high-performing and accessible. This philosophy is reflected in the overall balance: a sound oriented towards the traditional French tone (centered, precise, projected), and ergonomics adapted to today's demands. The gold lacquer finish (version BC8403-1-0 ) adds a slightly brighter timbre color without straying from the core sound sought by the brand.

For Which Musician and Styles?

This intermediate/professional baritone saxophone is intended for musicians who already have solid technical foundations and want an instrument capable of supporting serious progression: conservatory students, big band saxophonists, brass band players, or studio musicians seeking a reliable baritone. Thanks to its consistent response and homogeneous intonation, it is suitable for both jazz (clean attack, projection, solid lows) and classical performance (stability, precision, register homogeneity).

Sound and Design

The Serie 400 baritone aims for a clear and focused tone, with controlled projection, ideal for blending in an ensemble while maintaining a strong presence. The mention of a large bow (the lower bend, or large bend) emphasizes a more natural emission in the lower part of the instrument: low notes such as C#, C, B, Bb, and A come out with greater ease and stability, which is crucial on a baritone.

The gold lacquer finish provides a rich and classic aesthetic and can offer a slightly more open and bright timbre sensation. The hand-engraved bell enhances the instrument's premium character. Mechanically, the mother-of-pearl key buttons (inserts on the keys) improve comfort under the fingers and contact precision, especially during fast passages.

For reliability and stability, this model features a ribbed construction : the keys are mounted on ribs (plates) that stiffen the assembly and promote long-term adjustment retention. The Pisoni pads with metal resonators contribute to good sealing (thus easier sound production) and a more direct response. The term resonator refers to the piece (here metallic) fixed on the pad, which influences attack and projection.

Finally, the reinforced spatula and bracing (structural reinforcements) are designed to withstand intensive use and handling, an important point for a large-format instrument like the baritone.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To complement the instrument daily, you may consider: a cork grease (for the neck joint), a baritone saxophone swab (internal maintenance after playing), as well as a baritone saxophone harness to better distribute the weight during repetition or on stage. Baritone saxophone reeds will also be essential; the strength choice will depend on your mouthpiece and level.

Technical
