evans-b14onx2-peau-onyx-noire-14-67177
B14ONX2 - GENERA G2 BLACK 14

Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

The Onyx series follows the tradition of EVANS drumheads designed to combine impact, control, and durability. With over 60 years of innovation, the brand has made history with ranges that have become benchmarks and an approach focused on the practical needs of drummers. The Onyx Frosted positions itself as a robust and characterful solution, featuring a matte black visual identity and a pronounced attack, ideal for performance-oriented setups.

Who This Drumhead Is For

This 14 bass drum head is aimed at intermediate to expert drummers seeking a head that can last over time, with a more direct and articulate sound in a live context. It is particularly suited for styles where the bass drum must remain precise and present: rock, pop, punk, modern metal, worship, and all stage situations requiring a sharp attack and well-controlled low end.

Features and Innovations

Constructed with double ply film (7.5 mil per ply), the EVANS Onyx Frosted 14 prioritizes tuning stability and durability, even under intense playing. Its Frosted coating is not just aesthetic: it contributes to a grippier playing feel and emphasizes the attack while supporting the response in the low frequencies. Like all heads from the brand, it benefits from rigorous design and American manufacturing, ensuring consistent production quality from one unit to another.

Sound Characteristics

The sonic character of a bass drum depends greatly on the shell, but a double ply head like the Onyx clearly influences the outcome: it tends to offer a more controlled sound, with a more pronounced attack and naturally contained harmonics. The result is often punchier and easier to place in a mix, especially in live situations where clarity is paramount.

The Frosted finish provides a more articulated response to the beater strike and enhances the sense of impact while supporting the low end for a bass drum that remains full and present. Paired with other Onyx heads, it creates a coherent set both visually and in the attack-to-low-end balance.

Technical
