hal-leonard-pastorius-jaco-bass-method-86390
Pastorius Jaco - Bass Method

Summary of This Method

Designed as a deep dive into the legacy of Jaco Pastorius (1951-1987), this bass method offers a structured journey around what defined his musical revolution: groove approach, melodic sense, articulation, harmony, and mastery of solo playing. The content is based on concrete elements from individual lessons, giving the whole a pedagogical, direct, and authentic tone.

You will find played examples, explanations of techniques and theory concepts applied to the bass, as well as sections focused on interpretation and musical language. The method emphasizes understanding (not just replication): how to build a line, how to develop an idea over several measures, how to bring out the music in a group context, and how to approach personal practice effectively.

The repertoire is based on iconic pieces associated with Jaco and his universe, including: Chromatic Fantasy, Continuum, Donna Lee, Havona, Opus Pocus, Portrait of Tracy, Teen Town, and other tracks. The online audio, accessible via the code provided in the book, covers all examples and allows verification of sound, phrasing, dynamics, and timing.

Finally, the inclusion of scans from Jaco's practice notebook adds an inspiring dimension: you're not only working on exercises but also discovering a way of thinking and organizing progress. A particularly valuable resource for bassists seeking to enrich their vocabulary, sharpen their ear, and approach more expressive playing, from groove to solo.

Technical specifications

<colgroup><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"></colgroup>

Publication

Methods

<colgroup><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"></colgroup>

Artist

Jaco Pastorius

Instrumentation

electric bass guitar

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0984/0872/6803/files/78c3bea648580ae14a832372c29817e8a678092a_HL00695570BIS.jpg?v=1792513384
