Originally titled The Flute of Pan at the time of its creation, this piece was composed in 1913 as incidental music for a dramatic poem by Gabriel Mourey. In the central scene, Pan plays the reed flute, an instrument into which the nymph Syrinx has been transformed. However, he is not visible to the other nymphs or the audience.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo best reproduce the scene, the dedicatee, Louis Fleury, customarily performed the piece behind a screen in concert.
