The piece constantly plays on the contrast between stability and outbursts, between periodicity and freedom, giving the trio a very theatrical breath and great clarity.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt the center, the clarinet plays a particularly expressive role: the cadenza juxtaposes an unchanging swing between two notes (E and G) and interventions of phrases, attacks, and sound colors with an improvisatory character. The work opens with an interrogative episode in \"smooth time,\" then the pulse asserts itself, immediately disrupted by irregular accents. The vibraphone sometimes acts as a unifying instrument for the trio, while certain sections play on very clear periodicities (up to six groups of triplet sixteenth notes), or, conversely, on a fragmentation of discourse among the three instruments.
