novello-stabat-mater-satb-pergolesi-373370
Stabat Mater SATB - Pergolesi

Summary of This Score

Written shortly before the death of Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, the Stabat Mater stands as one of the most moving sacred works in the Baroque repertoire. This music touches through its intensity and clarity: the vocal lines breathe, the expressive accents serve the text, and the voice leading maintains a contrapuntal elegance typical of church writing. There is an almost "theatrical" energy inherited from opera, yet always in the service of devotion: a precious balance for a choir seeking both the beauty of sound and the meaning of the words.

This edition features Desmond Ratcliffe's arrangement for SATB choir, offering a piano reduction accompaniment intended to replace the organ and strings. The keyboard provides harmonic foundation, guides entrances, and highlights essential counter-melodies, offering reliable support both in rehearsal and concert settings. This setup facilitates ensemble cohesion (intonation, shared breathing, articulation) while allowing detailed work on contrasts and the transparency of the Baroque style. Suitable for advanced amateur ensembles as well as experienced choirs, this score offers a flexible solution to program a major sacred music work without sacrificing the expressiveness of the melodies or the precision of the Latin text.

Technical specifications

<colgroup><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"></colgroup>

Musical Genre

Classical

Publication

Sheet music

<colgroup><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"><col style="width:25%"></colgroup>

Composer

Giovanni Battista Pergolesi

Genre

Baroque sacred music

Arranger

Desmond Ratcliffe

Language

Latin

Instrumentation

SATB choir and piano (reduction)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0984/0872/6803/files/5b2118d20cee4895ac3fb5f0883852b2cc01bc2a_MUSNOV072474.jpg?v=1792524147
