Studio headphones are considered tools for analytical listening control. They are also used by musicians who want to have monitoring during recording sessions. In the world of home studios, live performance, and DJing, there are two main categories of headphones. Closed-back headphones are generally intended for recording, while open-back headphones are more oriented towards mixing and mastering.
Closed-back Headphones
Closed-back headphones are used by sound engineers to isolate themselves from external noise and/or to overcome poor acoustics in order to monitor the recording or mixing in progress. Being closed prevents microphone “bleed” into the capsule and, conversely, isolates from outside noise with a usually thick ear cup.
Open-back Headphones
Open-back studio headphones add a ventilation grille on their outer side. Air flows freely, the sound is less compressed, and usage is less fatiguing. In return, acoustic isolation is reduced and low frequencies may be weakened.
Semi-open Headphones
There are also often high-end semi-open headphones where the ear cup shell is slightly vented to relieve the sound engineer tired from the strict isolation caused by a closed model.
Comfort of a Home Studio Headphone

In a home studio, you spend a lot of time with your monitoring headphones, so they must be comfortable and durable. Neither too heavy nor too tight, they must be able to fade into the background when necessary and cause no physical discomfort over time. This depends on several components such as the headband, the ear pads, the fabric covering used, and finally the type of clamping force around the head.
Circumaural coupling means the headphone ear pad surrounds the ear (which is more comfortable), whereas supra-aural coupling simply means the headphone rests on top of the ear. In the case of a supra-aural headphone, the ear cups attached to an adjustable headband rest on the ear cartilage with the ear pads serving as protection. The pressure exerted by the headband then comes into play. If it is strong, the ear cups will hold firmly and the headphone is less likely to slip, but too much pressure can be uncomfortable.
Impedance and Sensitivity: Choosing Your Professional Audio Headphones

Impedance, measured in ohms, expresses the resistance of the headphone to the alternating electrical current passing through it. The higher the impedance value, the more power the headphone requires to produce the same sound volume. A headphone with an impedance above 50 / 60 ohms is normally intended to be connected to a preamplifier or other audio equipment whose headphone output provides sufficient electrical voltage.
Conversely, headphones with 16 or 32 ohms impedance are better suited for smartphones, whose output power generally does not exceed a few tens of milliwatts. If you connect a high-impedance headphone to them, you will get low sound even at maximum volume, and the battery life will be significantly reduced.
Sensitivity can be likened to efficiency and indicates the maximum sound level a headphone can deliver from a given power. For example, a headphone with a sensitivity of 105 dB SPL (Sound Pressure Level) requires less energy than a 90 dB headphone to reach the same sound level.
