Summary of This Score
Following Autumn Rhythm (2018) and Number 1 (2019), Camille Pépin continues her cycle of chamber music works inspired by Jackson Pollock's "all-over" universe. With Gris-brume, she explores for the first time the repertoire for cello and piano, transposing into music the pictorial material of Number 14: a world of layers, dark interlacings, and gray diffusion, like black paint diluted on canvas.
Although the piece does not bear Pollock's title, the composer here embraces a more distinctly French lineage. The fluid and textural character of the painting becomes an experimental ground close to Debussy: subtle timbres, finely balanced registers, atmospheres of fog and smoke. From the very first measures, the piano sets the scene with a barely rumbling left hand, while the right hand sparkles with a cascade of bells in an archaic modal color. The keyboard then multiplies harmonic lighting effects, especially in the bass, reminiscent of the art of Estampes.
The piano initiates and shapes the atmosphere, then welcomes the cello to form a fusion tandem, far from a simple melody-accompaniment hierarchy. A lyrical theme eventually emerges from the strings before the ensemble grows in scope: the writing follows an ascending trajectory, driven by a progressive energy that, through its irresistible crescendo, may evoke some of Ravel's great works. Throughout the discourse, the initial mist becomes populated with motifs emblematic of Camille Pépin's language: balanced rhythmic formulas, increasingly insistent, steering the work towards dance.
This dance, initially bright and playful, gradually acquires contrasts: opposing articulations, marked dynamic breaks, sudden tensions. The dark entanglements of the painting then seem to emerge, transformed into a fantastic ballet. An ideal score for duos seeking an expressive contemporary repertoire, rich in colors, and demanding in the finesse of balances between cello and piano.
