Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The Blackstar HT series has established itself as a benchmark for achieving tube amp tones in accessible formats suited to guitarists' everyday needs. The HT-1R MKIII fits this logic: a low-wattage amp usable at home and in the home studio, while retaining the range's DNA (attack, warmth, natural compression). This MKIII generation modernizes the experience with a more recording- and versatility-oriented approach, while keeping the "boutique" spirit right down to the panel and control design.

Who This Amp Is For

The BLACKSTAR HT-1R MKIII is designed for guitarists who want a compact tube amp without compromising on playing feel. It is well suited for beginners seeking a true tube sound from the first hours, as well as experienced musicians who need a simple, inspiring, and reliable combo for practice. Its size and power make it particularly comfortable at home and in the studio, with a big advantage for direct recording via USB-C. Style-wise, it covers a wide spectrum: blues, rock, pop, hard rock, and modern metal thanks to an overdrive channel capable of going far while remaining precise.

Features and Innovations

At the heart of the HT-1R MKIII is a clear and efficient architecture: two channels (clean and overdrive) footswitchable, and especially four voicings to multiply tonal characters without complicating controls. The clean channel offers two identities (American Clean and British Clean) to switch from a rounder, fuller clean to a sharper, more articulate clean. The overdrive channel, also with two personalities (Classic Overdrive and Modern Overdrive), allows choosing between a more vintage saturation and a tighter, more contemporary approach.

The major evolution of this MKIII generation is the integration of CabRig, a DSP simulation technology based on IR (impulse response), designed to facilitate headphone playing, direct recording, and tracking. You can explore different speaker and microphone combinations via dedicated software, then save up to 3 presets recallable from the amp. The package is completed by modern connectivity, including USB-C for easier recording and integration into a modern production setup.

The Sound

The HT-1R MKIII is a tube combo focused on feel: pick response, micro-dynamic variations, and that natural compression that makes playing more "alive." Thanks to the HT (High Tension) concept, the amp powers the tubes with the high voltage needed to achieve authentic behavior, even at reduced wattage.

In clean mode, expect a usable and musical sound, with clear chord definition and a solid base for pedals. Switching between American and British allows quick adjustment of the clean tone's personality depending on the guitar (single coils or humbuckers) and style. In overdrive, the tone becomes denser and richer: Classic Overdrive breathes and recalls traditional overdrives; Modern Overdrive tightens the attack and sharpens palm mutes, ideal for punchier rhythms. The ISF control completes the package by refining the overall voicing, from a tighter "American" register to a warmer, mid-focused "British" signature.
