A "Complete Studio" Approach in the Cranborne Audio Range

The 500R8 was designed as a centerpiece for modern studios wanting to combine high-end conversion, analog 500 series processing, and monitor control in a single coherent device. Whereas a hybrid studio often requires stacking an audio interface, a 500 rack, a monitor controller, a headphone amp, and signal distribution solutions, the 500R8 centralizes these functions to simplify cabling, ensure reliable routing, and speed up decision-making during recording and mixing. The result: a unique hub designed to evolve with your studio as you add 500 series modules and expand your connectivity needs.

Intended Uses and Studios

The Cranborne Audio 500R8 is aimed at producers, sound engineers, and composers who switch between multitrack recording, analog processing, and mixing within a DAW (PC or macOS). It is especially relevant if you want to build a "custom" recording chain (preamps, EQs, compressors in 500 series) while maintaining a fast workflow: install your favorite modules, route, print the sound, and keep control over monitoring without adding external devices.

Thanks to its zero-latency analog artist mixer and high-power headphone outputs, it also meets the demands of sessions with musicians: comfortable listening, clear returns, and immediate communication via talkback. Finally, its digital integration (ADAT 16 inputs / 16 outputs, Word Clock, S/PDIF, MIDI) makes it a solid foundation for expanding a studio with digital preamps, external converters, or synchronization systems.

Key Features: Analog/Digital Hybrid, No Compromises

USB 2.0 Interface: Plenty of I/O and Optimized Latency

Connected via USB 2.0, the 500R8 presents itself as a full audio interface with 28 inputs / 30 outputs. This architecture allows simultaneous recording of multiple sources, creation of return buses, and flexible routing between the DAW and analog gear. MIDI I/O facilitate integration of controllers and expanders, while ADAT, S/PDIF, and Word Clock ports ensure natural compatibility with professional digital setups.

8 500 Series Slots: Your Custom "Analog Plugin Bank"

The heart of the 500R8 is its 500 series rack format: you have 8 slots to build your sonic character. Preamps, equalizers, compressors, saturators, de-essers: each module becomes a real link in your chain. The benefit goes beyond recording: dedicated source switches per slot also allow you to send tracks from your DAW to the modules and then re-record them, applying analog processing with clear and repeatable routing.

Compared to a traditional "interface + separate 500 rack" setup, the advantage is immediate: fewer patching interfaces, natively designed insertion points, and a signal path engineered for fast work without losing the musicality of analog processing.

Reference Conversion: Dynamics, Precision, and Analog Character Preservation

To capture every nuance of your modules and summing, the 500R8 features high-performance A/D and D/A conversion, boasting a dynamic range of 121 dB (A-weighted) and very low distortion (THD+N down to approximately 0.00032% depending on measurement conditions). Its internal clock is designed for extremely low jitter (below 0.5 picoseconds), preserving transient accuracy and stereo stability, especially during track stacking and successive analog processing.

8-to-2 Analog Summing Mixer: The "Console" Finish at Mixdown

The 500R8 includes a discrete 8-channel to 2-channel analog summing mixer. Positioned after the 8 500 series slots, it lets you add bus processing (compression, subtle saturation, coloration) on the stereo mix with a studio-style approach. A dedicated converter can record the stereo mix on USB inputs 9/10, with comfortable headroom (up to +24 dBu) to maintain clean peaks and achieve a solid sound without clipping.

Monitor Controller + Talkback: Immediate Control of Listening

The monitoring section manages two speaker systems (Speaker A / Speaker B) and offers essential studio control functions: smooth switching, mono sum, DIM, and mute. The talkback goes beyond a simple internal mic: you have an XLR mic input with 48 V phantom power, and the talkback signal is automatically routed to headphone outputs and connected C.A.S.T. links for clear communication both in the booth and control room.

Zero-Latency Analog Headphone Mix and C.A.S.T. Distribution

For tracking, the 500R8 offers a zero-latency monitor mixer with per-channel volume and pan controls, ideal for quickly creating a comfortable headphone mix. The C.A.S.T. technology transports 4 channels of balanced analog audio over a single Cat5 cable, a practical solution for remotely sending signals (returns, talkback, stems) while keeping cabling tidy in an evolving studio.
