Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

CVL follows the Italian tradition of manufacturing shells and components for drum kits, with an approach focused on production precision and consistent quality. This Padouk shell is part of solutions designed for assemblers, workshops, luthiers, and demanding drummers who want to build a custom instrument without compromising on the acoustic foundation. Within the range, it is positioned as a premium "project" shell, combining a wood with a strong character, controlled construction, and a manufacturing philosophy centered on musicality.

Who This Drum/Shell Is For

This shell is primarily intended for intermediate to expert drummers, technicians, artisans, and anyone wishing to assemble a 14-inch snare drum that reflects their personal style. Since Padouk is a dynamic wood, it suits contexts where a clear and present snare is desired: rock, funk, pop, gospel, fusion, as well as contemporary music in the studio where attack and definition are essential. For beginners, it can be an excellent starting point if the goal is to build a durable instrument, provided they are comfortable with drilling and assembly steps.

Features and Innovations

The key feature of this shell is its unpierced format: the holes for lugs, trigger, butt plate, and vent remain to be made, allowing you to adapt the instrument to your specifications (type of trigger, spacing, number of tension rods, positioning). To guide you, you can use a Sparedrum LO16 or LO26 template to correctly place the future drillings. For a clean and chip-free result, it is recommended to use hardwood drill bits and to measure and verify the required drilling diameters for your hardware before proceeding.

CVL also highlights an exclusive manufacturing process that uses less glue than traditional methods. The goal is to preserve more of the "wood" behavior, for a more organic response with freer shell vibration. All this is part of an ISO 9001-certified production framework, ensuring consistency and traceability of processes.

Sound Characteristics

Padouk is a wood known for its balance between attack and warmth. Its density promotes a clear response with a well-defined note contour: the stick "speaks" quickly, which improves the precision of ghost notes and the sharpness of rimshots. On a snare drum, this often translates into a feeling of control and presence, highly appreciated both live and in close-miking recording situations.

With a 6-ply construction and contained thickness, the shell maintains good resonance and natural projection without becoming overly rigid. Depending on the choice of heads, hoops, and snare wires, you can steer the sound towards more "crack" (stiffer hoops, higher tuning) or towards a rounder, fuller texture (lower tuning, thicker head). The internal 45-degree bearing edge contributes to a clean seating of the head, enhancing attack clarity and an immediate response sensation.
