Summary of This Sheet Music
Composed in 1886, The Carnival of the Animals was conceived by Camille Saint-Saëns as a fantasy with a parodic character, to the extent that he asked Auguste Durand that the complete work be published only after his death, fearing that this entertainment music would harm the more "serious" image of his catalog. The work was indeed published in February 1922, two months after the composer's passing.
But a major exception contributed to the legend: as early as 1886, the cellist Charles-Joseph Lebouc obtained permission to create and publish a transcription for piano and cello of movement no. 13, " The Swan." This adaptation quickly established itself as a showpiece for the cello: broad melodic line, sustained tone, expressivity of vibrato, subtle balance with the piano accompaniment. Each interpretation invites the listener to imagine a majestic swan gliding on a lake, and the success was such that Saint-Saëns had to "accept" it despite the initial restrictions imposed on his musical bestiary.
