A Nano Format to Capture the Spirit of the Operation Overlord

The Nano Operation Overlord carries the sonic DNA of the original Operation Overlord in a more compact chassis, focusing on the essentials: an amp-style drive based on multiple JFET stages, with a gain reserve capable of covering a wide range, from near-transparent boost to dense distortion. Released in 2019, it fits the EHX philosophy: offering a modern, versatile pedal that is easy to integrate into very different setups while remaining simple to use.

Who Is It For, and Which Styles Does the Nano Overlord Excel In?

This pedal is aimed at guitarists who want a versatile overdrive/distortion for rock, blues, pop, indie, stoner, and even more modern genres when pushing gain and EQ. Its Dry Blend and input level selector also make it very relevant for bassists seeking saturation that retains definition, as well as for keyboardists who want to thicken their sound without making it muddy.

In the studio, it allows laying down a controlled, well-EQ'd layer of grit, while live, its Nano format and straightforward operation (Normal/Boost) make it an effective solution to switch from rhythmic crunch to a more aggressive tone without reorganizing the entire pedalboard.

Controls and Design: A Sculptable Drive Designed to Adapt

The Nano Operation Overlord offers two gain architectures via a Normal / Boost switch. In Normal mode, the saturation relies on three JFET gain stages with an "amp-like" behavior, perfect for low to medium gain levels, with sensitivity to picking attack and instrument volume. In Boost mode, an "overdrive pedal" type circuit is added before the JFET stages: this provides more drive, more sustain, and a generally more pronounced distortion.

For adapting to different sources, the 3-position input level selector helps optimize the amount of gain from the start, whether you plug in a single-coil guitar, an active bass, or a keyboard. Finally, the 3-band active EQ allows precise shaping: you can tighten the lows for clarity, scoop or boost the mids to stand out better in the mix, and adjust the highs to maintain presence without harshness. The Dry Blend control mixes the clean signal with the saturated signal, a major advantage for preserving punch and articulation.

The Sound

The Nano Operation Overlord delivers saturation that is both rich in harmonics and responsive to playing dynamics. At moderate gain, it offers a smooth, snappy crunch that respects dynamics: playing hard brings out the grain, while playing softer opens up the sound and lets it breathe. In Boost, it shifts to a thicker distortion with more compression and sustain, ideal for solid riffs and effortless leads.

Its character can range from a fairly "clean" drive to a more colored saturation depending on EQ settings and chosen input level. The Dry Blend helps keep the low end clean and stable, avoiding the "squashed sound" effect on bass and allowing chords to remain clear on keyboards, even with generous saturation.
