A Controller Designed to Get the Most Out of Compatible ENGL Amps
The Z-9 is one of the brand's iconic controllers: instead of just switching channels, it was designed to exploit the switching logic of compatible ENGL amps. In S.A.C. (Serial Amp Control) mode, you control channels and additional functions directly from the floor, without interrupting your playing. And when you need a more "universal" control for a MIDI setup, the Z-9 transforms into a simple and efficient MIDI footswitch with 10 memories. It is especially recommended for ENGL heads and preamps listed by the manufacturer: Powerball II, Sovereign 100, Tubepreamp 570, Invader, and Special Edition.
Who Is the Z-9 For, and In What Contexts Does It Make a Difference?
The ENGL Z-9 is aimed at guitarists who want reliable and immediate control of their amp: metal riffs with clean channel changes, rock/lead passages with a single press, or clean/crunch alternation in the middle of a verse. It is ideal for concerts (where every second counts), rehearsals (to maintain a clear workflow), and also in the studio if you want to chain takes with recallable settings.Technically: no special prerequisites. If you are already comfortable with channel switching, you will appreciate the "foot-operated" logic. And if you are new to MIDI, the 10 presets / 2 banks mode is an excellent entry point: simple, clear, without complexity.
Controls, Modes, and Connectivity: Full Foot Control
The Z-9 offers 6 switches : four dedicated to channels, plus two configurable function switches depending on the amp's possibilities. In S.A.C. use, you can control channels and two switching options (depending on the amp: gain, voicing, boosts, etc.). In MIDI use, the Z-9 becomes a controller with 10 Program Changes organized in 2 A/B banks : so you have 5 direct calls per bank, plus bank switching. On the integration side, the connectivity is designed for ENGL rigs: dedicated control output (S.A.C.) and MIDI connectors. Power can be supplied directly by some amps via phantom power (depending on connection type and model), which helps lighten your pedalboard by avoiding an additional power supply block.
Sound
The Z-9 does not process the audio signal: it adds no distortion, coloration, or high-frequency loss. Its "sound impact" lies elsewhere: in the fluidity of transitions and precision of changes (channel, functions, presets), allowing you to stay focused on touch and dynamics. In short, you keep the character of your ENGL amp, but gain a more musical, more responsive foot control, and your signal chain remains clean.Technical specifications
