Historical context and positioning in the range

For over 60 years, EVANS has been one of the brands that shaped the modern synthetic drumhead by offering solutions focused on drummers' "real problems." The Super Tough (ST) range follows this spirit: a snare drumhead designed to withstand, deliver a powerful rimshot, and remain stable over time. In the Dry variant, it aims for enhanced harmonic control, ideal when seeking a precise snare sound that is easily usable both live and in the studio.

Who this drum/instrument is for

The EVANS Super Tough ST Dry 14 is intended for intermediate to expert drummers who play loudly, seek a durable head, and want an immediately controlled sound. It is particularly suited for styles where the snare must remain clear and "short": rock, punk, metal, powerful pop, modern funk, gospel, as well as studio contexts where limiting harmonics without adding multiple muffling accessories is desired.

Features and innovations

This 14" snare batter head is built on a double ply film (7.5 mil per ply) to provide consistency, longevity, and tuning stability even under heavy playing conditions. The Dry version incorporates machined decompression holes around the perimeter to reduce harmonics and sustain: you get a more controlled, "drier" sound with increased precision under the stick. Like all EVANS heads, it is designed to respond very sensitively, even at low dynamics, despite its robust construction.

Sound characteristics

With its two plies, the ST Dry naturally emphasizes a solid attack and significant projection, while providing a sense of "body" and control. Compared to a single ply head, the response is generally more controlled, with less intrusive sustain and better tolerance to heavy strokes.

The peripheral vents further refine the result: unwanted harmonics are attenuated, the note is shorter, and the sound becomes more direct, ideal for sharp rimshots and a well-defined snare sound in the mix. This also helps achieve a more usable tuning more easily, especially in stage conditions where acoustics can accentuate certain resonances.
