Historical Context and Positioning in the Range

The Catalina Club series carries Gretsch's DNA with an aesthetic inspired by classic kits and a focus on musicality. Within the manufacturer's lineup, it stands as an accessible yet serious option, designed to offer genuine acoustic feel, refined finish, and a distinctive sound character, whether at home, in rehearsal, in the studio, or on stage.

Who This Drum/Tom Is For

This 12 x 8 inch tom targets advanced beginners and intermediate drummers seeking an authentic acoustic sound, as well as experienced musicians looking for a simple, effective, and highly "mixable" additional tom. It is particularly suited to styles where body and tone are essential: rock, blues, funk, pop, soul, indie, and modern jazz. In a kit configuration, it provides a versatile high register with a clear pitch that is easy to place.

Features and Innovations

The 7-ply mahogany shell is paired with a 30-degree bearing edge, a choice that facilitates consistent head contact and makes tuning more intuitive. This results in a flexible response with a comfortable playing feel, useful both for dynamics and stronger hits.

Regarding durability, the 1.6 mm steel hoops help keep the tom firmly in tune without restricting the shell's openness. The new GTS (tom suspension) completes the setup: by allowing the shell to breathe more, it improves note sustain and projection, a real advantage for recording and live contexts.

Sound

Mahogany is renowned for its warmth and density in the low-midrange. On this tom, it translates to a generous pitch, singing mids, and a present but rounder attack than naturally brighter woods. The result is perfectly suited for grooves, "vintage" contexts, and sounds that need to remain musical without harshness.

Thanks to the 7-ply construction, projection remains solid and sustain stays controllable: open to breathe on stage, or shorter and more muted for studio use. The Gretsch heads made by Remo help quickly find a balance between attack precision, pitch center, and control, making the tom usable right from the first tuning.
