Summary of This Score

"Caught in a pincer" between the famous Symphonies No. 7 and No. 9, Symphony No. 8 still holds a special status today. From its premiere in February 1814, it was considered less spectacular, with one critic even noting that it caused "keine Furore." Yet, beneath the appearance of a return to older forms, Beethoven plays with music history and subverts expectations.

At first glance, the work seems to reconnect with genres considered outdated, notably by reintroducing a Minuet in the third position, following an Allegretto scherzoso, where one would rather expect a slow movement. But this decision, far from being a mere nod to the past, becomes a field of experimentation: Beethoven breaks traditional models and proposes surprising solutions, making this Eighth a crucial milestone in the evolution of the symphony.

Based on the musical text from the complete edition of Beethoven's works and enriched with a new preface, this recent edition reflects advances in Beethoven scholarship. Offered here as a study edition, it makes this major text accessible "at little cost" and in a practical format, particularly suited to musicians, students, conductors, and enthusiasts wishing to deepen their reading of the score.
