Summary of This Score

Beethoven's interest in the art of variation runs throughout his career, and this volume II brings together major pages written between 1799 and 1823, a pivotal period of his Viennese maturity. This selection highlights the composer's inventiveness in transforming thematic material, from the Variations on Original Themes op. 34 and op. 35, true laboratories of piano writing, to the Variations in C minor WoO 80, where expressive density and harmonic work anticipate a later aesthetic.

The pinnacle of the collection, the Diabelli Variations op. 120, hold a central place in the repertoire: a monumental architecture, rhythmic and contrapuntal characterization of rare richness, and a sense of form that make it a cornerstone for the advanced performer. This Urtext edition in a revised version is based on the advances of the critical commentary of the complete Beethoven works edition, offering a reliable working basis for study, teaching, and performance. Ian Fountain's fingerings complete the set with clear proposals, useful for building technique, organizing hand positions, and serving phrasing, without overloading the reading.
