Summary of This Score

The variation form accompanied Beethoven throughout his career, and this Volume I highlights his early explorations of the genre. This edition gathers piano variations from the Bonn period and the first years in Vienna, composed between 1783 and 1799. Here we discover an already inventive Beethoven, who most often draws his themes from popular airs, melodies, and theatrical pieces of his time, transforming familiar material into a playground for pianistic experimentation.

Throughout the pages, the writing alternates between variations close to ornamentation of the melodic line and deeper transformations, where the composer modifies character, texture, and rhythmic drive. This diversity foreshadows the future "characteristic variations" that will become one of the hallmarks of his style. For the pianist, it is an ideal opportunity to approach Beethoven from both a playful and educational angle: clarity of the melody, articulation, voice balance, sense of form, and mastery of contrasts.

Offered in an Urtext edition, the score benefits from a fully revised musical text. The preface and commentary provide valuable insight into the sources, context, and editorial decisions, making it a resource as relevant for study as for performance. Klaus Schilde's fingerings complete the whole with a practical approach, useful for building a solid technique without losing sight of the musical intention.
