Summary of This Score

Johannes Brahms
Waltzes op. 39

More modest in appearance than the Hungarian Dances, Brahms' 16 Waltzes op. 39 reveal another facet of the composer: an art of miniature, detail, and poetry. Each waltz explores a specific mood, between rhythmic elegance, tenderness, and restraint, while remaining deeply rooted in German Romanticism. This collection thus constitutes an excellent practice ground to develop a sense of style, rubato flexibility, and mastery of dynamic contrasts.

This edition offers the two-hand piano version, arranged by Brahms shortly after the original publication. It highlights a clear and singing pianistic writing, ideal for working on hand independence, melody projection, and the balance of inner voices. Among these pages, number 15 has established itself as one of Brahms' most famous tunes, often perceived as a lullaby due to its sweet and immediately memorable melodic line.

Designed as a revised edition (replacing HN 42), this publication is based on the text from the new complete edition of Brahms' works. The musical edition is overseen by Katrin Eich, while the fingerings by Rolf Koenen provide concrete guidance for approaching transitions, refining articulation, and gaining naturalness in the waltz movement.
