Summary of This Score

The second book of the Préludes opus 32 by Sergei Rachmaninoff was composed in the countryside during the summer of 1910, at the family estate of Ivanovka. This Prelude in G major op. 32 no. 5 is a particularly inspired example: a piece with a dreamy atmosphere, carried by a supple melody and refined harmony that evokes delicate impressionism while retaining the Romantic depth characteristic of Rachmaninoff.

This Henle-Urtext edition emphasizes the reliability of the musical text: access to autograph sources, made possible through collaboration with the Glinka Archives in Moscow, allows for a score designed for serious study as well as performance. The piano playing benefits from increased clarity, notably in the balance of voices and the shaping of melodic lines.

With a "not too high" level of difficulty, this score is well suited for advanced amateurs wishing to work on tone, legato, pedaling, and the implementation of natural rubato. Marc-André Hamelin's precise and pragmatic fingerings provide solid reference points to develop comfortable technique and serve expression, whether in daily practice or recital preparation.
