"Signature Collections" in pedal format: the "Brown Sound" spirit in TONEX

In the late 1970s, a young Dutch guitarist changed rock history with a legendary amp tone: a burning, edgy, ultra-expressive sound that redefined how riffs and solos are attacked. To document and recreate this aesthetic, IK Multimedia worked with Jim Gaustad, renowned for his meticulous pursuit of the famous "Brown Sound."

This version of the TONEX ONE brings this inspiration directly to your foot, with presets from the Signature Collections TONEX Brown Sound. The idea is simple: capture the energy, natural compression, and bite of these iconic tones without hauling a vintage amp, a stack, and all the associated logistics.

A pedal designed for live, home studio, and minimalist pedalboards

The IK MULTIMEDIA ToneX One caters both to guitarists seeking a plug-and-play solution and to seasoned musicians looking for a reliable backup or an ultra-compact fly rig. It's also suitable for bass, convenient for building a shared pedalboard (or sharing a "rig" pedal for rehearsals and small gigs).

In practice, it excels for: going direct to a PA, driving an amp (on a clean channel or via the effects loop), feeding an FRFR-type sound system, or practicing with headphones when you want to keep volume controlled. Blues, rock, hard rock, modern metal, pop, worship, ambient: the format is small, but the playground is wide thanks to the models and presets.

Controls, modes, and functions: maximum features in an ultra-compact interface

The ToneX One's strength is its "stage" approach: you set the essentials on the pedal and play. The 4 controls are designed to be quick and musical: Bass/Gate, Mid/Comp, Treble/Verb, and Vol/Gain. In short, you shape your 3-band EQ and adjust, depending on the preset, essential live tools: noise gate to reduce hum, compression to tighten the attack, and reverb to place the guitar in space.

The footswitch offers 2 modes: either true stompbox behavior (On/Off), or an A/B mode to alternate between two sounds within a bank. Add to that the built-in tuner and customizable RGB colors: very useful when stacking multiple mini pedals or when you want to instantly identify the active preset on a dark stage.

The AIMM DSP technology is there to capture the "feel": the amp's response, how the low end tightens up, the singing midrange, and the gain cleaning up when you roll back the guitar volume. All this with a fully analog Dry path to maintain a direct feel and natural attack, even in very simple setups.

The sound

The ToneX One aims for an "amp under your fingers" feel: dynamic, responsive, and capable of moving from a tight crunch to a denser lead without losing the attack's character. For sounds inspired by the "Brown Sound," expect a harmonically rich drive, a present midrange that cuts through the mix, and musical compression that gives the impression of easy sustain-ideal for legato lines, double stops, and punchy riffs.

And since the TONEX ecosystem allows you to vary models, the pedal is not limited to a single character: it can become a platform for sounds (clean, edge of breakup, high-gain, drive pedal simulations, bass rigs). In practical use, it's cited in content and setups of very diverse artists, including Joe Satriani, Ola Englund, Pete Thorn, Lincoln Brewster, Uruha, and Nate Navarro, proving that the mini format can meet professional demands both in studio and on stage.
