A 5-string inspired by USA DNA: the 55-94 spirit, version 55-02
The 55-02 incorporates key elements that made the USA 55-94 series renowned: the same playing philosophy, the same 35" / 889 mm scale length, and a sound approach focused on versatility. Its electronic core revolves around LH3 pickups and an LH3 preamp powered by a 9V battery, with convenient access via a clip compartment. Internal switches allow adjustment of the mid boost/cut frequency to fine-tune the response according to your amp, playing style, or mix.
For which bassists and styles?
The Lakland 55-02 is aimed at intermediate to expert bassists who want a reliable, expressive 5-string ready for demanding situations: concerts, recordings, intensive rehearsals. Thanks to its active electronics and MM-J configuration, it naturally adapts to funk, rock, pop, gospel, metal, and modern contexts where the B string must remain clear and punchy, even in dense mixes.
The sound
The 55-02 combines an ash body with a quilted maple top, a duo appreciated for its projection, clear attack, and presence in the upper mids. The MM-J configuration offers true versatility: the "MM"-style pickup delivers solid lows and modern punch, while the "J"-style pickup adds definition, articulation, and precision on attacks. The Lakland LH3 preamp provides effective shaping through bass, mid, and treble EQ, with a progressive blend to balance each pickup, and a master volume featuring a tone control bypass (push/pull) for quickly switching from a hi-fi sound to a more direct approach.
