Summary of This Method
Improvisation et Modesis a practical method by Alain Bouhey and Yochk'o Seffer, designed to open conservatory-based interpretation to improvisation. The core of the work is based on the 7 Greek modes generated by the Ionian mode (major), approached with a logic close to jazz aesthetics: modal color, function of scale degrees, and possible expansions through derivatives.
Throughout the pages, the method establishes solid and immediately usable foundations: discovery of modality, knowledge of chords, sense of rhythm, melodic construction, transposition, and modulation. It can be introduced as early as the second year, or even from the 7th month of instrument study (or even in solfège, as some content can be sung). The improvisations written as studies, as well as the proposed improvisation tracks, illustrate a level of achievement toward which students can aim after several years of familiarization, notably in the 3rd cycle or in D.P.S.
