Summary of This Score

Born from a walk through the streets of New York in May 2005, Streetsseeks to translate a very particular experience of the city: the density of simultaneous activities, the impossibility of isolating a gesture or trajectory without them being "blurred" by dozens of others, and the paradoxical impression of an almost static totality despite constant agitation. It is precisely this phenomenon that Bruno Mantovani sets to music, constructing a work where intensity does not depend on modulation or traditional thematic development, but on perception and texture work.

Within a deliberately limited harmonic universe (the entire piece rests on a single chord), the discourse alternates very animated moments and calmer sequences where relative silence is never synonymous with immobility. The writing highlights progressive transformations of identifiable elements towards accumulative textures, in a spirit close to what is called "granular synthesis" in electroacoustics: the ear is invited to follow the evolution of the material, its densities, colors, and micro-variations, rather than a narrative based on juxtaposition.

Streetsalso represents a formal challenge: Mantovani imposes on himself a more directional conception of form, without collaging ideas, while retaining the characteristic energy of his writing. He also chooses a condensed format (about fifteen minutes) and a small ensemble, contrasting with his larger-scale projects and usual forces. For the performer, the score demands great ensemble rigor, constant rhythmic precision, and fine attention to balance, so that the layers remain clear and the tension persists until a deliberately energetic ending.
