A Hybrid Approach by McDSP: The APB in the Range, Between Plug-ins and Outboard

With the Analog Processing Box, McDSP offers a hybrid solution that sits halfway between the flexibility of a software environment and the musicality of an analog circuit. Where a traditional outboard requires manual adjustments and sometimes tedious recall, the APB-16 retains the ergonomics of a plug-in: you work within your session, and the unit executes the processing in its analog domain.

Within the APB range, the APB-16 follows the philosophy of the APB models while offering more channels for modern workflows (stem mixing, group processing, dense sessions, or mastering with parallel processing). The result: you can multiply instances and build a coherent chain without sacrificing full recall or automation.

Who Is It For and What Studio Applications?

The APB-16 is aimed at sound engineers, producers, and mixers who want genuine analog processing without leaving their DAW. In mixing, it provides dynamic control, density, and character on buses (drums, vocals, guitars, synths) while maintaining clean and reproducible routing. In mastering, it meets the needs for precision, transparency, and consistency, with the ability to instantly recall a project even long after.

This approach is particularly relevant if you switch between multiple projects, collaborate remotely, or need to deliver quick revisions: the APB-16 combines the feel of an analog processor with the discipline of a fully recallable session.

Operation and Processors: Analog Controlled by Plug-in

An "In the Box" Workflow, Sound Processed Outside

The principle is simple: an APB plug-in receives your audio, associates it with a control signal, then sends everything via Thunderbolt to the APB unit. The control signal drives the analog components to execute the selected algorithm with the exact parameters from your session. The audio is then processed in the analog domain, reconverted to digital, and returned at the plug-in output directly within your project.

Recall, Presets, and Automation: The Discipline of a Plug-in, the Response of a Circuit

Each instance operates like a classic plug-in: preset saving, automatic recall when opening the session, and automation possible with sample-level precision. You can thus perform transitions, dynamic movements, or threshold adjustments with typically digital finesse while retaining the analog behavior of the processing.

A Palette Focused on Dynamics, Console, and Mastering

The APB-16 comes with a collection of plug-ins dedicated to routing and controlling the analog circuits, including a console simulation and several dynamic processors. From multiband compression to transparent limiting, including more characterful signatures (tube, saturation, aggressive character), the set aims to cover real studio needs: stabilizing a vocal, densifying drums, smoothing a bus, or securing a master without losing impact.
