A "Modern" Recorder That Has Become a Reference at Mollenhauer

Developed in 1996 through the collaboration of flutist Nik Tarasov and maker Joachim Paetzold, the Mollenhauer Modern Alto marks an important milestone in the evolution of the alto recorder. Unlike traditional recorders where some harmonics remain difficult to exploit, this model follows the principle of harmonic recorders : it aims for clearer harmonics, more reliable sound production, and a range that naturally pushes the instrument toward "concert" playing.

For Which Musicians and Styles?

This alto recorder is intended for intermediate to advanced (and professional) musicians seeking an instrument capable of standing out in contemporary contexts. Its balance of power, intonation, and flexibility makes it comfortable in chamber music, with piano, in ensembles, but also in pop, folk, or jazz aesthetics. The fingerings remain familiar thanks to the Baroque fingering, with only some notes in the third octave requiring specific combinations.

Sound and Design

The grenadilla body provides a focused timbre and excellent stability, with a crisp response that favors attack precision. The long bore and "harmonic" design enhance projection and intonation, especially when pushing the instrument into the upper registers. The E key pipe extends the range downward to the low E and opens possibilities for alternative fingerings and trills. The triple E/F/F# key improves comfort and fluidity on chromatic passages, particularly in the lower register.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To preserve the grenadilla and the precision of the joints, regular use of a swab after playing and joint grease (for the tenons) is recommended. A protective case is essential to limit shocks and humidity variations.
