A "Ned Steinberger" Approach: Playing Tradition, Design Innovation
Founded in 1990 by instrument designer Ned Steinberger, NS Design develops electric instruments that push performance standards forward. The CR Omni Bass series embodies this philosophy: offering an instrument capable of meeting very different needs, from electric bassists seeking double bass-like feel to double bass players wanting a more compact, easier-to-transport playing partner that's stage-ready immediately.
For Whom and in Which Styles?
The NS Design CR Omni Bass targets intermediate to advanced musicians looking for an instrument that is both expressive and flexible. It suits both pizzicato (jazz, pop, rock, funk, variety, contemporary music) and bowed playing (amplified chamber music, film scores, contemporary compositions). Its concept makes it especially appealing for tours, gigs, studios, and setups where the space and mic placement of an acoustic double bass become limiting.
Sound Character
The tonal character relies on a combination of pickups and electronics. The Polar directional piezo responds selectively to vibration: favoring the "vertical" axis yields a more sustained and rounded sound, close to an electric bass; favoring the "lateral" axis delivers a more percussive pizzicato response and a more dynamic bowed sound, with natural and expressive articulation. Complementing this, the EMG magnetic pickup provides more classic electric colors, with very low noise levels, ideal for modern and defined sounds (primarily intended for pizzicato playing). The system is powered by 18 volts electronics, designed to maintain headroom and dynamics, useful when alternating between soft playing, sharp attacks, and very expressive passages.
Recommended Compatible Accessories
This CR Omni Bass comes with a gig bag and a strap. For other accessories, since formats (length, gauge, specific "Omni" design) may vary depending on versions and desired setups, it is advisable to select strings and accessories after verifying exact references and intended use (pizzicato, bowing, tuning, tension).
