Historical Context and Positioning Within the Range

The New Yorker series is part of PDP's (Pacific Drums & Percussion) DNA: offering practical and accessible drum kits developed in California with the expertise of DW. The idea is simple: to provide a truly compact, lightweight, and quick-to-set-up kit while maintaining manufacturing and hardware standards worthy of a stage instrument.

Within the PDP range, the New Yorker is positioned as the ultimate "mobility" solution. It meets the needs of drummers who move between rehearsals, lessons, café concerts, or who want a second kit that's easy to live with, without giving up the true feel of an acoustic drum set.

Who This Drum Kit Is For

This PDP New Yorker is aimed at both motivated beginners and intermediate, active drummers looking for a compact kit. Its reduced footprint is especially relevant if you play in tight spaces (small stages, studios, places of worship, bars) or if you regularly need to transport your instrument.

In terms of styles, the short and responsive configuration works very well for pop, funk, indie, modern jazz, neo-soul, and all music where a snappy, precise, and quickly controllable drum sound is appreciated. With a good choice of heads and tuning, it can also handle rock at reasonable volume while maintaining a clean attack and clear low end.

Features and Innovations

The New Yorker concept is based on a balanced 4-piece configuration centered around a 16-inch bass drum: a format highly appreciated for its ease of placement and immediate response. The kit includes a tom mount on the bass drum with a 10.5 mm diameter tom arm, convenient for quickly mounting the tom without adding extra stands, and a bass drum riser to optimize beater positioning on a small bass drum.

The hardware emphasizes reliability and tuning precision thanks to True-Pitch tension rods developed by DW, known for offering finer and more stable tuning. The mini lugs with a compact design help reduce weight, enhancing the kit's appeal for mobile drummers.

Finally, it is important to note the "to be completed" positioning of this version: the drum kit is delivered without hardware or cymbals. This is an advantage if you want to choose your stands, pedals, and cymbals according to your playing style, budget, and requirements (ultra-light, studio, rugged touring, etc.).

Sound

The poplar shells are appreciated for their warmth and balance: they produce a naturally round sound with a soft to moderate attack and a consistent response across the entire range. Poplar favors a musical and forgiving tone, very pleasant for working on dynamics and achieving a kit that tunes easily without fighting overly aggressive overtones.

The 16x14 bass drum surprises with its presence: the low end is shorter and more focused than a 22-inch, but remains solid with an immediate "punch" perfect for amplified contexts or small spaces. The 10x8 tom provides clear and precise articulation, while the 13x12 floor tom offers a dense and quick low-mid range, ideal for effective fills and a well-defined groove. The 14x5 snare drum fits easily into the mix: sharp rimshots, controlled ghost notes, and sensitivity suitable for both light playing and stronger hits.

The original Remo heads contribute to a coherent sound right out of the box, providing a solid base to adjust attack, sustain, and projection according to your tuning and style (more open for live, more muted for studio, tighter for funk, etc.).
