What FilterFreak 5 Is For
FilterFreak 5 is a filter effect plug-in designed to add movement, depth, and true personality to your tracks. It is suitable for electronic productions (house, techno, hip-hop, synthwave) as well as more organic genres (funk, rock, pop) where dynamic auto-wah, wide filter sweeps, or more "freaky" modulation effects on vocals, guitars, and drums are sought.
Whether you want to tighten a bass, make a pad "breathe," transform a drum loop into a rhythmic sequence, or create build-up transitions worthy of hardware, FilterFreak 5 quickly becomes a central tool in a DAW: it shapes timbre, animates arrangements, and brings that famous "analog movement" that breathes life into a mix.
Main Features
The Sound of Resonant Filters, with More Control
FilterFreak 5 captures the spirit of classic resonant filters and takes it further with an extended range of settings. Select the filter type (low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch) and adjust the slope from 2 to 8 poles to achieve anything from a smooth, musical cut to a radical, highly selective effect. Resonance can range from a simple frequency accent to more biting squelch effects, perfect for leads, basses, or aggressive drums.
One or Two Filters: Series or Parallel
The dual filter mode opens up very effective sound design possibilities. In series, you chain treatments to obtain more complex curves (for example, tightening then accentuating a specific area). In parallel, you combine two filter signatures to thicken a source while maintaining clarity, or to create stereo movement and a more pronounced sense of depth depending on your routing and settings.
Creative Modulations: LFO, Envelope Follower, and Sample-and-Hold
To create groove, FilterFreak 5 offers modulations ready for modern production. The LFO enables wide sweeps, fast pulses, or very precise oscillations, with the ability to synchronize to tempo to lock the effect to your quarter notes, eighth notes, or dotted values. The envelope follower tracks the signal's energy (ideal for funky auto-wah effects like guitar, clavinet, or synth) and transforms a performance's attack into natural filter movement. Finally, the sample-and-hold provides more "sci-fi" effects and stepped random variations, perfect for waking up an arpeggio, loop, or vocal.
Advanced Editing: Rhythm Editor and Shape Editor
To go beyond standard modulations, FilterFreak 5 integrates workflow-oriented editing tools. The Rhythm Editor facilitates the creation of detailed rhythmic filter sequences, ideal for turning a pad into a percussive pattern or adding pulse to static stems. The Shape Editor, meanwhile, allows you to draw your own LFO shapes to move from smooth, gradual motion to broken curves, asymmetric rises, or more complex patterns, all while maintaining musical coherence.
Analog Saturation: From Thick Clean to Bold Grunge
The filter becomes even more expressive when pushed. With 7 saturation styles, you can add harmony, density, and a "hardware" vibe that helps a track find its place in the mix. Use it to thicken a bass, add bite to drums, dirty up a vocal for a controlled lo-fi effect, or simply enhance the impact of a filter sweep in a build-up.

Questions frequently asked
Is FilterFreak 5 compatible with Mac and Windows?
Compatibility is ensured from macOS OS X 10.12 and Windows 10 onwards. It is a full downloadable software.
What types of filters are available?
Four modes are offered: low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and notch. Filter slopes range from 2 to 8 poles.
Can an auto-wah synchronized to the tempo be created?
The LFO can be tempo-synced to align sweeps with rhythmic values. The envelope follower tracks the signal's energy to generate a reactive auto-wah. The sample-and-hold creates stepped random variations.
Does the dual filter work in series or parallel?
Two filters can be combined in series to build complex filter curves. A parallel routing allows blending two filter characteristics.
What saturation is integrated into the plugin?
Seven saturation types provide harmonics and density enhancement for basses, drums, vocals, or synths.
