Essential Information About the Sterling Stingray RAY4 Walnut Satin Bass

  • Accessible StingRay Spirit: the iconic look and the signature Music Man attack in a version with a very convincing price/performance ratio.

  • Ceramic humbucker pickup: a powerful, precise, and percussive tone, ideal for cutting through the mix in a band setting.

  • Active electronics: volume + 2-band EQ to quickly shape your sound, from warm to sharp.

  • Modern comfort: maple neck, 22 frets, and 38 mm nut width for smooth playability.

A Modern Take on a Classic Electric Bass

The StingRay made its mark in the late 1970s by becoming a reference for bassists seeking power, clarity, and presence. The Sterling Stingray RAY4 embraces this philosophy with a more accessible approach, while retaining the fundamentals that have made the StingRay design famous: a single humbucker, active electronics, and a clean, instantly recognizable aesthetic.

Who Is It For, and What Styles?

The RAY4 is suitable for beginners looking for a reliable and rewarding bass as well as intermediate and advanced players seeking an effective instrument for rehearsals and live performance. Its character is particularly well-suited to funk (fingerstyle and slap), rock, pop, and modern genres where a clear attack and a solid low-end foundation are expected.

The Sound

The Sterling Stingray RAY4 features a ceramic humbucker in the bridge position, known for its punchy response, firm lows, and excellent definition in the attack. The active electronics and 2-band EQ allow quick adjustment of bass depth and brightness, enabling you to shift from a round, full sound to a more snappy and incisive tone. The basswood body provides balance and versatility, while the maple neck promotes precision and responsiveness. The rosewood fingerboard slightly softens the high end to maintain a musical tone, even with more aggressive settings.

Recommended Compatible Accessories

To stay close to the original string gauge, you can opt for a set of Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky Bass strings, ref. 2833 (4 strings). A standard bass strap and a tuner (clip-on or pedal) are also simple and reliable choices to complete the instrument for everyday use.
