Key Information About the TC Electronic Magus Pro Pedal

  • High gain analog distortion with a smooth and singing grain, designed to remain musical even at high gain levels
  • 3 voicings via a Fat / Classic / Turbo switch to switch from a tight and incisive sound to a broader, massive distortion
  • Filter Control acting as a high cut filter to adjust the bite and adapt the pedal to any amplifier
  • True Bypass and compact format with jacks and power input on the top, ideal for optimizing space on a pedalboard

A "slow slew" distortion in the spirit of the classics, designed for versatility

The Magus Pro follows the tradition of analog distortions with a strong character, featuring a circuit designed to replicate the "slow slew rate" behavior popularized by legendary op-amps like the LM308. The idea is simple: maintain a precise attack, limit harsh artifacts in the high spectrum, and achieve smoother saturation when pushing the gain. Within the TC Electronic range, it positions itself as a compact yet very complete distortion, capable of covering both sharp rhythms and sustained leads thanks to its three modes.

Who it's for and what it's for: from edgy rock to hard rock, in the studio or on stage

The Magus Pro is aimed at guitarists who want an easy-to-adjust distortion pedal that is flexible enough to switch styles in a single move. It suits beginners to advanced players very well: three clear potentiometers, a mode selector, and you're immediately in the sound.

It excels in rock, punk, hard rock, stoner, and modern alternative genres, but can also serve as a tight boost/drive on an already crunchy amp. On a pedalboard, it works well both as the main distortion and as a second gain stage after a softer overdrive. In the studio, its high cut filter helps fit the distortion into the mix without heavy EQ adjustments afterward.

Controls and features: the efficiency of a Gain / Volume / Filter trio + 3 modes

The Magus Pro goes straight to the point: Gain adjusts the amount of saturation, Volume controls the output level to balance a clean/crunch preset or push an amp's input, and Filter acts as a high cut filter especially useful to tame a bright amp, soften an aggressive bridge pickup, or conversely retain more presence depending on your setting.

The 3-position switch changes the structure and feel under the fingers. Classic emphasizes punchy mids with a tight low end, perfect for rhythm playing. Turbo adds more headroom and a higher output level, with less compressed saturation, very effective for leads that cut through or to drive an amp harder. Fat strengthens the low end foundation and reshapes the upper mids for a more "hard rock" signature, ideal in a power trio or when playing in drop tuning and wanting to keep body.

Finally, the True Bypass preserves the signal when the pedal is off, and the top-mounted jacks make for clean wiring on a pedalboard.

The sound

The Magus Pro offers a distortion that is both dense and articulate, with a texture that remains relatively smooth for its category, especially when increasing gain. The dynamics are well present: lowering the guitar volume yields a drier, less saturated attack, while playing harder delivers generous sustain.

The overall character is rather mid-friendly (very useful for cutting through a mix), while the Filter allows choosing between a modern edge and a more rounded vintage-style high end. In Turbo mode, you feel more reserve and projection, which helps for solos and parts where the guitar needs to "cut through" without necessarily adding more gain.
