Summary of This Score

Composed in 1931, Béla Bartók's "44 Duos" have established themselves as a major reference for understanding 20th-century musical languages. Originally linked to a pedagogical context (they were included in the collection intended for violin teaching by pedagogue Erich Doflein), these duos go far beyond mere study material: character miniatures, stylized dances, imitative dialogues, and accentuation games form a musical laboratory as captivating as it is effective.

Until now, the version for two cellos was limited to 18 selected duos. This edition now offers the entirety of the pieces, allowing for a complete, coherent, and progressive journey. The adaptation respects the spirit of Bartók's writing while adjusting to the realities of the cello's range and strings: some lines are shifted an octave down and, when the original relies on the violin's open E string, the transposition is done by a twelfth.

Throughout the duos, there is a structured introduction to Bartók's "expanded tonality," as well as to fundamental elements of Hungarian folk music and neighboring regions: modes, melodic turns, rhythmic cells, typical phrase lengths, and accentuations. This is a valuable resource for students in formal training (conservatories, music schools) as well as for demanding amateur duos, with immediate benefits for intonation, pulse, attacks, and ensemble cohesion.
