Vandoren V16: the "rue Lepic" heritage serving jazz

Located at 56 rue Lepic, the Vandoren house has established itself worldwide thanks to the manufacturing excellence of its mouthpieces and reeds. In this spirit, the V16 range was developed to meet a very specific demand: to recapture the character, energy, and color of great jazz sounds while maintaining consistent and reliable manufacturing. Available for soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, the V16 in ebonite has become a standard among many saxophonists, notably for its ability to adapt to different roles (section or lead playing) and various jazz aesthetics.

For which soprano saxophonist?

This mouthpiece is primarily aimed at jazz-oriented saxophonists seeking an expressive sound and great interpretive freedom. It is well suited for intermediate to advanced levels: the response remains accessible, but the V16 reveals its full potential when one masters air control, attack, vibrato, and dynamic management. Its temperament makes it an excellent choice for modern jazz, bebop, funk, and pop as soon as a clear presence and strong projection on the soprano are desired.

Sound and design

The soprano V16 in ebonite (vulcanized natural rubber) offers a comfortable feel and a highly appreciated acoustic behavior: stable response, consistent sound across registers, and articulation that remains precise even at high intensity. Vandoren emphasizes key parameters for your sound identity: tip opening (the gap between the reed tip and the mouthpiece tip), chamber (the internal volume influencing color and resistance), and internal geometry (roof, bore), all elements that affect projection, brightness, and ease of play.

The V16 series is available with different chamber types (notably S+ or M ) to guide the response: depending on your role (section/lead) and blowing style, you can aim for more density, more grip, or greater sonic openness. The specific chamber design is said to provide brightness and depth, for a soprano that remains both present and musical without losing the necessary foundation in an ensemble context.
