A Ribbon Inspired by the 1950s, Modernized Without Losing Its Spirit
The Warm Audio Fen-tone draws inspiration from a classic 1950s ribbon microphone, appreciated for its organic sound and its very musical way of smoothing transients. Warm Audio takes the idea of a compact-format ribbon, easy to position, and adds design choices suited to current demands: custom CineMag USA transformer, powerful neodymium magnet, and high-precision aluminum ribbon. The result: you get the "ribbon" aesthetic (material, roundness, naturalness) with a response more usable in modern recording chains.
For Which Uses and Studios?
The Fen-tone is aimed at home studios as well as professional control rooms seeking an immediately recognizable color on acoustic and amplified sources. On a guitar cabinet, it adds body and presence that is less aggressive than a classic dynamic mic. On drums, it excels as a room mic, supplementary overhead, or on certain pieces (depending on placement) to achieve a wide image and a silky top end. On brass, strings, or piano, its figure-8 polar pattern allows intelligent use of room acoustics by capturing both front and rear.

Questions frequently asked
Does the Warm Audio WA-2FT Fen-Tone require phantom power?
Phantom power is only required to activate the Warm Lifter JFET preamp with its selectable +26 dB gain. In passive mode, the microphone has a sensitivity of -47 dBV re. 1 V/Pa; it reaches -21 dBV re. 1 V/Pa in active mode.
What polar pattern does this ribbon mic offer?
The figure-8 bidirectional polar pattern captures sources in front and behind while providing strong side rejection. This configuration notably allows for Blumlein stereo recordings and targeted control of bleed through orientation.
Is this microphone suitable for guitar amp and drums?
Its maximum sound pressure level reaches 148 dB at 1 kHz with less than 1% harmonic distortion. It can thus be used in front of a guitar cabinet, as an ambient drum microphone, or as a supplementary overhead.
What ribbon is used in the Fen-Tone?
The dynamic capsule employs a 99.1% aluminum ribbon, 1.8 microns thick, paired with a neodymium magnet and a custom CineMag USA transformer.
What connectivity and format does this ribbon microphone have?
The XLR output has an impedance of 300 ohms in passive mode and 150 ohms when active mode is engaged. With dimensions of 170 x 38 mm and a weight of 303 g, the compact size facilitates precise placement around sources.
