- “Tiger”, the guitar belonging to Jerry Garcia, sold for $11.56 million at Christie’s, shattering initial estimates.
- Derek Trucks played it the very next day at New York’s Beacon Theatre with the Tedeschi Trucks Band.
- The buyer, Bobby Tseitlin (Family Guitars), wants it to be part of a “living collection” of instruments that are played, not displayed.
- Trucks performed “Statesboro Blues”, “Sugaree”, and slipped in a nod to the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star”.
At Woodbrass, we keep an eye on auctions for legendary guitars, and when we saw the hammer come down at $11.56 million for Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger,” we figured it would end up behind bulletproof glass. Nope. 24 hours later, it was roaring onstage at New York’s Beacon Theatre in the hands of Derek Trucks. Here’s a look back at a historic moment.
Tiger: The Guitar Worth (Far More Than) Millions
On March 12, 2026, Christie’s in New York hosted the sale of the collection of late Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, who died in 2025. Among the lots was “Tiger,” the legendary guitar of Jerry Garcia. Estimated at between $1 million and $2 million, it soared to $11.56 million—making it one of the most expensive guitars ever sold, just behind David Gilmour’s “Black Strat” ($14.55 million on the same day).
The buyer: Bobby Tseitlin, co-founder of Family Guitars in Chicago. His philosophy? No vaults. Tiger joins a “living collection” alongside two other Garcia guitars.
Garcia commissioned Tiger from luthier Doug Irwin in 1973 with just one instruction: “Don’t hold back.” Irwin took six years to build it. The result: a 6.1 kg guitar with a “hippie sandwich” body (laminated cocobolo, maple, and padauk), decorated with a mother-of-pearl tiger beneath the bridge. Garcia paid just… $5,800.
Derek Trucks Lets Tiger Roar at the Beacon Theatre
The day after the sale, on March 13, Derek Trucks picked up Tiger onstage at the Beacon Theatre, in the middle of a 10-night residency with the Tedeschi Trucks Band. Videos from the auction showed Trucks sitting next to Tseitlin when the hammer fell—many thought he had bought the guitar. False alarm: he was there as a friend.
Trucks opened the set with Blind Willie McTell’s “Statesboro Blues”—a choice steeped in history, since the song opened the legendary Allman Brothers Band concert at the Fillmore East exactly 55 years earlier. Other songs played with Tiger included:
- “Willie the Pimp” by Frank Zappa (the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s first time performing the song)
- “Angel From Montgomery” by John Prine, followed by…
- “Sugaree,” a Jerry Garcia classic—played on his own guitar
The icing on the cake: Trucks slipped in a “Dark Star” tease by the Grateful Dead at the end of the first set. A crystal-clear nod to Garcia’s legacy.
Tiger’s distinctive sound comes from its substantial build and onboard electronics. If you want to get closer to that rich sustain and signature warmth, explore solid-body guitars made from solid wood with warm humbucker pickups and a well-adjusted action.
A Historic Guitar Finally Set Free
Tiger is much more than an instrument. Garcia first played it on August 4, 1979 in Oakland. It stayed with him throughout the 1980s, the Grateful Dead’s most glorious years, and was onstage for the band’s final concert at Soldier Field in 1995.
After Garcia, Jim Irsay acquired it in 2002 for $850,000 and occasionally loaned it out—notably to Warren Haynes in 2016. Now that it belongs to Family Guitars, with the intention of having it played regularly, a new chapter is beginning.
When Music Refuses to Fade Away
24 hours between the auctioneer’s hammer and the hands of a world-class musician. No bulletproof glass—just a stage, an amp, and a guitarist who knows what to do. Tiger belongs onstage, not in a museum.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band is continuing its residency at the Beacon Theatre and preparing its new album, Future Soul. Tiger has already been played two nights in a row. One thing is certain: somewhere, Jerry is smiling.
