Meeting KUTU

Born in the clubs of Addis Ababa under the creative drive of violinist Théo Ceccaldi, KUTU is a collective project bringing together two Ethiopian singers, Hewan Gebrewold and Haleluya Tekletsadik. Embarking on this journey alongside his brother Théo, Valentin Ceccaldi traded his cello for the bass.

On drums, Cyril Atef—longtime companion of Vincent Ségal in Bumcello—brings his touch of madness behind the kit. A great lover of cross-cultural music and collective projects (he recently contributed to Guts’ latest album), Atef infuses the project with his knowledge of Afro rhythms and his sense of groove.

Behind her MoFo and Nord Stage 2 keyboard, Akemi Fujimori—seen with Naive New Beaters and Prudence—adds a pop flavor to this cosmopolitan project, blending it with contemporary music. With their style described as ethno-trance, KUTU craft a smart fusion of genres, building a true bridge between Africa and the West. The Woodbrass team met Théo Ceccaldi and Cyril Atef to learn more about this adventure.
