The Characteristics of Clarinet and Saxophone Mouthpieces

A saxophone or clarinet mouthpiece is defined by different features that will have a lasting impact on the sound of the instrument.
It won’t turn an entry-level saxophone into the “instrument of the century”, but it will significantly improve both quality and playing comfort for the musician.
Here’s a quick rundown of the key aspects to check

Tip Opening

This is the gap between the table and the tip of the mouthpiece, defining the facing length, and usually measuring between 1 and 2 millimeters.
A small opening produces a warm, mellow tone, ideal for classical music, and is also easier for beginners to play.
A wider opening generates a richer timbre, preferred in jazz and contemporary music, but is also more challenging to play.

The Chamber

This is the part of the mouthpiece at the beginning of the cylindrical bore.
The shape of the chamber acts like a filter and plays a crucial role in defining the sound, with its diameter affecting the quality of the timbre.
A wider chamber enhances the low frequencies, producing a rounder, fuller tone reminiscent of the “classical sound” or vintage jazz players.
Conversely, a smaller chamber increases brightness.

The chamber also affects the ease of response, sound consistency, and overall projection.
A large chamber requires more air support.
The chamber size is either specific to the mouthpiece design or listed in its specifications.
Be cautious with measurements: French mouthpieces often use millimeters, but each manufacturer may rely on its own comparison charts.

The Baffle Shape

No, don’t look up! The baffle, sometimes called the “deflector”, is the part inside the mouthpiece running from the tip to the back of the chamber, opposite the reed that vibrates when air is blown.
Its shape influences the richness of the tone, in relation to the chamber size.
A flat baffle produces darker sounds, while a curved baffle creates a brighter tone.
Baffles can also be shaped like a step or horseshoe, each adding its own tonal character.
The closer the baffle is to the reed, the more powerful and bright the sound.
A straight baffle delivers a warm, airy sound, whereas a high, uneven baffle produces a metallic or edgy timbre, leading to a more distorted sound.
The ideal middle ground provides a balanced timbre with flexibility, though less distinctive in character.
The baffle also impacts playing comfort.

Baffle Height

A low baffle requires lots of air.
A very high baffle is easy to play, allowing effortless bends and growls, but can be harder to control in virtuosic passages.

The Table

This is the flat surface where the reed is placed, usually measuring between 15 and 25 millimeters.
Be careful with measurements: the overall table length is usually longer.
The curved section at the tip of the mouthpiece is the facing length, typically around 15 to 25 mm.
This area is essential as it defines the reed’s oscillation capacity—greater with a longer facing.
