A boutique head with a "classic" vibe, designed in a studio-friendly format

The Ace Amplification Colt positions itself as a boutique, dual-channel alternative to iconic British heads whose sound has shaped rock history. The idea is clear: to capture the palette of a "1959 4-input" spirit and the more modern attack of an "800" spirit, but in a more accessible 20-watt format for everyday use, more straightforward to dial in, and easier to integrate into a modern rig.

Its design emphasizes robustness and consistency: high-end European custom components, compact lunchbox-style format, and handcrafted manufacturing. The result: a tube guitar amp head that aims for character without the usage constraints often associated with large vintage amps.

For which guitarists and playing contexts?

With its 20-watt tube power and built-in attenuator, the Colt suits both guitarists looking for a versatile home amp head and those wanting a rehearsal amp or a compact stage format. At 20 watts, you get credible power to play with a drummer and a suitable speaker cabinet; at 2 watts, you retain a "live" amp feel to work on touch and nuances at controlled volume.

Style-wise, the Colt naturally excels in rock, hard rock, and muscular blues territories: tight crunchy riffs, singing leads, and taut rhythmic playing with responsiveness. It also performs very well as a pedal platform : overdrive, fuzz, boost, delay, and modulation find their place thanks to a well-articulated sonic foundation and an effects loop to keep repeats clear when gain is cranked.

The sound

The Colt is a tube head oriented towards British grain : present mids, a clear attack, and a pleasant natural compression when pushing the amp. The "Plexi" channel delivers a typical, tight, and harmonic drive that ranges from woody crunch to denser saturation by adjusting gain and volume, with excellent response to the guitar's volume knob.

The "Boost" channel goes for more bite and edge, with a tighter feel, ideal for riffs that need to stay clear and leads that cut through the mix. Thanks to the 20W / 2W attenuator, the Colt retains solid lows and convincing dynamics at reduced volume: you keep the "push" sensation and touch response without having to blast the speaker. Finally, its behavior makes it an excellent pedal base : an upstream boost to tighten lows and increase sustain, or a transparent overdrive to thicken crunch, integrate naturally.
