Summary of This Method

"Jazz Bass Compendium" is one of the most comprehensive methods dedicated to jazz bass, with 208 pages structured to guide both technical work and musical application. The book begins with a detailed focus on the right hand (position, impact on sound and timing, exercises, three-finger technique, drops), then explores the left hand (placement, position shifts, intonation, pizzicato, vibrato). A chapter is devoted to the coordination of both hands to gain rhythmic stability and playing precision in all situations.

The method then delves deeply into creating bass lines: managing rhythm, pulse, and timing, walking bass, two-beat feel, use of arpeggios, passing notes, approach notes, chromaticism, scales and tetrachords, pentatonics, as well as lines over II V cadences. You will also find harmonic clichés, pedal point work, rhythmic ornaments, patterns on standard chord progressions, not to mention approaches in straight 8ths and lines adapted to Latin styles.

To strengthen musical autonomy, "Jazz Bass Compendium" covers elements of sound, phrasing, and articulation, improvisation concepts, upper structure voicings, as well as scale studies (chord-scales, "breaking up" scales). Practice concepts and different learning fields help organize your daily work. Finally, studies and etudes on the charts of Sunny, Footprints, I Hear A Rhapsody, Solar, and Confirmation, along with 4 duos and a solo (including Georgia On My Mind, Blues 4U, and More Bass Hit) allow you to transform theory into musical reflexes.
