Summary of This Score

This score offers a selection of eight Concerti Grossi from the famous cycle of twelve by Arcangelo Corelli, a major figure of the Baroque era and a model of string writing. The edition by Paul Paradise aims for a decidedly "ready-to-play" approach: the lines traditionally divided between the concertino (soloists) and the ripieno (tutti) are combined to simplify the organization of parts and make these masterpieces accessible to various ensembles, from string quartet to string orchestra. To enhance playing comfort and musical unity, the editor also revised the bowings and added fingerings, a valuable asset for working on Baroque articulation, voice leading, and balance of sound layers.

The collection includes concertos with contrasting characters, alternating brilliance and lyricism, featuring bright major keys and more expressive minor movements. Notably, you will find Concerto Grosso No. 4 in D major, Nos. 7 in D major, 10 in C major, 11 in B-flat major, 12 in F major, as well as Nos. 3 in C minor, 8 in G minor "Christmas," and 2 in F major. An excellent resource to enrich a concert program, consolidate style (phrasing, dynamics, possible ornamentation), and develop collective listening within a string ensemble.
