A pair dedicated to stereo recordings: the 485 BK version

The Apex Electronics 485 BK presents itself as a coherent set for those seeking a simple and effective stereo recording solution. This "BK" version emphasizes a pragmatic studio approach: two identical microphones, useful accessories, and above all the ability to adapt the polar pattern via the supplied interchangeable capsules. The result: a microphone pair easy to integrate into a home studio as well as in a rehearsal/production environment, with a "faithful capture" character suited to group recordings.

Intended uses: drum overheads, choirs, and controlled ambient recordings

With its natural applications as drum overheads, the 485 BK targets engineers and musicians who want to capture the air and width of a kit without losing attack definition. In cardioid, you can tighten the pickup, limit bleed, and better control the room. In omni, you favor a more open image and a more natural low end, particularly pleasant on choirs, acoustic ensembles, or ambient recordings.

This versatility is useful whenever you need to choose between a "close and controlled" recording or a "wide and organic" one: room, distance to sources, ambient noise level, or pair placement (spaced pair, XY according to your habits) become real production levers.

Key features: capsules, useful dynamic range, and studio integration

Two polar patterns to shape the stereo image

The 485 BK comes with omni and cardioid capsules. This is a strong point to adapt the capture to the music and the environment: cardioid for a more focused stereo and better isolation, omni for a more natural spatial reproduction. This flexibility also simplifies placement management: you can adjust the balance between attack (transients), room resonance, and phase coherence according to your setup.

A comfortable margin on percussive sources

An overhead microphone must handle level variations, especially on cymbals, snare drum, and percussion. With a max SPL of 125 dB, the 485 BK allows working confidently on energetic sources while maintaining a usable mix-ready sound. The frequency response from 30 Hz to 16 kHz aims for a balanced capture, with usable lows and presence suited to overall detail (cymbal brilliance, choir intelligibility, ambiance).

XLR connectivity and included accessories for a reliable setup

The XLR connectivity ensures direct integration with most mic preamps, audio interfaces, and consoles. The supplied shock mounts help reduce handling noise and some vibrations transmitted through the stand, while the windscreens provide additional protection against light breath noises and air movement. The carrying case facilitates transport and storage, a real plus if you record outdoors, in a mobile studio, or on location.
