An Ashdown head designed to combine all-tube tradition with modern practicality

With the MF 484 2.N, Ashdown Engineering offers a guitar amp head that keeps the essentials: an all-tube circuit with expressive touch, designed to make your playing and pedals react like a "real" amp. The unique feature of this version is the integration of a Torpedo section that adds the flexibility of speaker simulations (IR) without sacrificing the feel and musicality of a tube power section.

For which guitarists and contexts: stage, studio, rehearsal

Thanks to its 30 watts, the MF 484 2.N suits both rehearsal guitarists and musicians playing on small to medium stages who want a comfortable headroom. In the studio, it becomes particularly practical: you can record a true all-tube amp sound while benefiting from a Torpedo output to feed directly into an audio interface or console, with carefully captured cabinets.

Regarding styles, this head targets guitarists who love expressive amps: blues, rock, pop, indie, and anything that demands a bright clean, articulate crunch, and rich saturation. The Boost also allows you to reach higher gain levels without necessarily stacking pedals, while maintaining a coherent sonic foundation.

Controls, Torpedo, and settings: from plug-and-play to fine-tuning

The MF 484 2.N goes straight to the point, with familiar ergonomics. The Gain and Volume controls manage the amount of saturation and overall level, while the 4-band EQ (Bass, Middle, Treble, Presence) sculpts the sound to suit your guitar, pickups, and cabinet. The switchable Boost is a real asset for moving from rhythm to thicker lead tones or to thicken crunch without losing attack.

The big "modern" advantage comes from the Torpedo (Two notes) output and the speaker simulation selector on the front panel: you instantly choose a cabinet/mic character suited to the situation. And if you like to fine-tune your takes, the USB-C port opens the door to more precise adjustments of mic choice and placement, to find the right balance between warmth, attack, and presence in the mix.

Sound character: EL84 tubes, brightness, musical compression, and lively crunch

Fully tube-driven, the MF 484 2.N relies on a rich preamp section and EL84 power tubes: the result is a lively sound with natural compression when pushing the amp, and a "springy" feel under the fingers. The clean tones can remain bright and expressive with great definition, then gradually shift to a snappy and dynamic crunch. Increasing the gain (and/or activating the Boost) yields denser saturation with generous harmonics, ideal for biting rhythms and singing leads.

The speaker simulations add a second level of color: depending on the selected cabinet, you can go from an open, airy sound to a tighter, more "forward" projection, very practical for positioning in a live mix or varying textures in recording without changing gear.
