A monitoring amplifier in the traditional studio spirit, designed for the CLA family
The Avantone Pro CLA-400 follows a decidedly "traditional studio" philosophy: a classic Class A/B design, a serious linear power supply with toroidal transformer, and high-quality Japanese components. The goal is simple: to provide stable, wide bandwidth, high-efficiency amplification capable of revealing micro-details in a mix without unnecessary coloration. Originally designed to accompany the CLA-10 studio monitors, it remains perfectly comfortable with most demanding passive speakers, whenever you seek power reserve, low distortion, and high clarity.
Who is it for and what studio uses?
The CLA-400 is aimed at studios working with passive speakers that want reliable, silent, and powerful amplification, whether in the control room, tracking room, or fixed installation. Thanks to its stability and low distortion, it is particularly suitable for mixing, mastering, and quality control, when transient precision and low-frequency balance are critical. Its 19-inch 3U rack format facilitates integration into a studio rack while maintaining clear front ergonomics (VU meters and controls), practical for monitoring levels without relying solely on the audio interface.
Key Features: dynamics, professional connectivity, and operating modes
Robust analog design for tight bass and stable listening
The CLA-400 employs a classic bipolar transistor design, sought after for its solid behavior in the low end and its ability to maintain controlled response when the speaker becomes harder to drive. The specified frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a tolerance of +/-0.5 dB contributes to coherent listening, while the THD below 0.1% at 1 kHz aims to preserve definition even at sustained levels.
Zero fan noise: ideal for nearfield monitoring
In the studio, mechanical noise is the enemy of precision. Here, convection cooling avoids any nuisance related to an internal fan. You can therefore place the amplifier in the same room as your monitors without adding background noise, a real plus for critical working environments and low-level listening.
3 modes to adapt to your setup
Depending on your configuration, the CLA-400 offers three operating modes: stereo for classic left/right use, parallel to distribute the same signal to both channels, and bridge to run the amplifier in bridged mono when you need increased power on a single speaker. This flexibility is useful both in the control room and multi-room studios, or for specific needs (mono center, extension, technical installation).
Studio connectivity: XLR and Speakon outputs, with Link
The CLA-400 adopts connectivity designed for studio workflow: XLR inputs and Speakon outputs for reliable connection to passive speakers, as well as a Link output for daisy-chaining the signal. The input impedance (20 kOhm balanced, 10 kOhm unbalanced) facilitates integration with many sources, monitoring controllers, and audio interfaces.

Questions frequently asked
Is the Avantone CLA-400 suitable for the CLA-10 passive monitors?
Originally designed for the CLA-10 studio monitors, this amplifier delivers 2 x 540 W at 4 ohms and 1 kHz. Its Class A/B operation and low distortion, less than 0.1% at 1 kHz, meet the requirements for precise monitoring.
What connectivity is available on this monitoring amplifier?
Two XLR inputs with Link outputs allow receiving and daisy-chaining a studio-level signal. Passive speakers are connected via Speakon outputs.
Can the CLA-400 be used in bridged mono mode?
The Bridge Mono mode provides 760 W at 8 ohms and 1 kHz to power a single speaker. Stereo and parallel modes are also available depending on the required wiring.
Does the CLA-400 amplifier produce noise in the studio?
Convection cooling does not use any internal fan. This design prevents any ventilation noise in the listening room.
What are the dimensions and weight of the CLA-400?
The 19-inch rack chassis occupies 3U and measures 483 x 487 x 133 mm. Its weight is 22.2 kg, to be considered for rack installation.
