What you need to know
- "Mix translation" reference: ideal for validating the mix balance on a deliberately bass-limited listening, similar to everyday systems.
- Focus on the midrange: highlights key areas such as vocals, guitar, and keyboards for more confident mixing decisions.
- Modernized design: smoother and more open response, with greater transparency in the treble and extended low-end compared to the classic cubes.
- Finish and studio integration: 165 mm cube format, neoprene isolation base, and stand mounting via standard microphone mount.

A Modern Reinterpretation of the Studio Reference "Cube"
The AVANTONE MixCubes continue the legacy of the famous Sound Cubes 5C used as a secondary pair of monitors in many studios. After a phase of research, comparative listening, and optimizations, the goal is clear: to regain the direct and "no-frills" character of a full-range cube while gaining smoothness, openness in the upper spectrum, and solidity in the low end. The result: a highly effective control listening experience to judge the essentials of a mix without being distracted by flattering frequency response.
Who Are They For and What Are Their Studio Uses?
These compact studio monitors are aimed at sound engineers, producers, beatmakers, and content creators who want to ensure the compatibility of their mixes. The MixCubes are designed as secondary monitors: they help verify vocal clarity, the balance of instruments in the midrange, and overall presence-exactly where many consumer systems "tell the truth." Complementing 2-way or 3-way monitors, they allow quick decisions on levels, EQ, and dynamics at both reasonable and higher volume levels.
Design: Rigid Enclosure, Refined Connectivity, and Optimized Driver
A More Rigid Closed Enclosure Designed to Limit Resonances
AVANTONE abandons the lighter panel approach in favor of a thicker, medium-density panel enclosure to achieve superior rigidity and low resonance. The 165 mm closed cube format with rounded corners promotes coherent reproduction and precise midrange reading while maintaining the "reference" spirit of a sound cube.
Connectivity and Studio Integration
The connectivity has evolved to massive machined nickel-plated binding posts (dual banana format), mounted on a black anodized aluminum plate with milling and silk-screening. A 7 mm neoprene base provides a non-slip surface and acoustic isolation, and the speaker includes a standard 5/8-inch threaded microphone mount for stand configurations.
Full-Range Driver Developed for a More "Open" Listening
The driver features a 133 mm aluminum die-cast basket with a polished mounting ring. The paper cone, formulated from New Zealand wood pulps with added mica fibers, aims to reduce weight and increase rigidity. The fabric surround, manufactured in Japan, and the magnetic assembly (Sumitomo 1008 low-carbon steel) contribute to a more transparent response while retaining the simple and practical character of a control listening experience.

Questions frequently asked
Are the Avantone MixCubes Active Red suitable as secondary reference monitors?
Using them as a second set of monitors allows for checking vocal clarity, midrange balance, and overall presence of a mix. The single-driver full-range design is intended to complement 2- or 3-way monitors.
What frequency response do the MixCubes offer?
The specified frequency response ranges from 90 Hz to 17 kHz. This range mainly targets control of the midrange and presence. The 5.25-inch full-range driver operates without any crossover between multiple drivers.
What connectivity and amplifier should be used?
For connection, the unit features a combo XLR/jack input. It has an impedance of 8 ohms, with a recommended amplifier power between 10 and 200 W.
Can the MixCubes be mounted on microphone stands?
With a standard 5/8-inch threaded mount, installation on a microphone stand is possible. The 7 mm neoprene base also helps with acoustic isolation on a supporting surface.
Are the Avantone MixCubes Active Red sold as a pair?
The packaging includes 2 speakers, each in a cube format measuring 165 x 165 x 165 mm and weighing 3.5 kg.
