A B&C Coaxial Designed for Compact and High-Performance 2-Way Speakers

The B&C 14CXN88 follows the logic of modern coaxial speakers: offering a coherent point source (low/mid and high frequencies aligned) while maintaining the level, power handling, and directivity necessary for sound reinforcement. With its neodymium magnet and 14-inch format, it targets enclosures where both efficiency and ease of integration are sought, especially when weight and size are as important as performance.

Its 80-degree coverage and dedicated HF driver make it a natural candidate for 2-way speakers with controlled directivity, providing a more stable image than a traditional woofer + separate horn setup, especially at short and medium distances.

Who It's For and Intended Uses

This coaxial transducer is aimed at speaker manufacturers, integrators, contractors, and skilled DIYers designing high-performance passive systems. It is particularly suitable for stage monitors (coherence and intelligibility), compact point-source speakers, fixed installations (clubs, multipurpose rooms), and systems where minimizing crossover overlap issues is desired.

Thanks to its sensitivity and frequency response, it can serve as a foundation for speakers capable of delivering high output levels with reasonable amplification, while maintaining precise reproduction of vocals and instruments. Its "point source" behavior is also appreciated when seeking even coverage and improved transient response.

Key Features and Design Highlights

Coaxial: coherence, phase, and simpler placement

The coaxial principle places the HF source at the center of the low/mid driver. The result: a sensation of a single source, better spatial coherence, and often simpler placement in a compact enclosure. This approach helps maintain more consistent dispersion in the crossover region between LF and HF, resulting in more uniform listening on and off axis.

Neodymium motor and mechanical robustness

The neodymium magnet allows maintaining an excellent power-to-weight ratio, which is valuable for portable speakers or setups where every kilogram counts. Mechanically, the 14CXN88 features a triple-roll LF suspension and an 8.5 mm Xmax, designed to withstand heavy demands in the low/mid range and maintain control at high levels.

Diaphragms and treatment for real-world reliability

The exponential cone benefits from a waterproof treatment front and back, an advantage for demanding environments (transport, humidity variations, intensive use). For the HF section, the model features a polyester/titanium diaphragm and a 3-inch (75 mm) HF voice coil, ensuring detailed reproduction and good thermal handling.

Two ways, two impedances: a solid base for proper filtering

The speaker is specified with 8 Ohms on the LF section and 8 Ohms on the HF section, as well as power ratings of 500 W AES (LF) and 80 W AES (HF). This separation facilitates the design of a passive crossover or use in bi-amplification (depending on the chosen speaker architecture), providing a clear basis for sizing amplification and protection.
