A Passive Crossover Designed for 2-Way Configurations

The B&C Speakers XO-6 belongs to the family of passive filtering solutions intended for 2-way speakers, where a simple, robust, and easy-to-integrate architecture is desired. In this type of setup, the crossover plays a central role: it distributes the signal to each transducer while maintaining a controlled overlap zone to preserve tonal balance and coherent dispersion. The XO-6 targets projects seeking a reliable crossover without relying on multiple amplifications or an external processor.

Who Is It For and What Are Its Uses?

This passive crossover is aimed at integrators, speaker manufacturers, sound technicians, and DIY enthusiasts assembling or refurbishing a 2-way sound reinforcement speaker. It is particularly suitable when you have a single amplifier per speaker (or per pair) and want to split the signal between the woofer/midrange section and the tweeter without adding active electronics. It is also a relevant option for restoring a speaker with a faulty original crossover or standardizing a speaker production based on a 1.5 kHz crossover frequency.

Design and Features: Clear Frequency Distribution

2-Way Filtering at 1.5 kHz

The XO-6 performs a separation at 1.5 kHz, a frequency often chosen to ensure a natural transition between a woofer/midrange driver and a tweeter, depending on the speaker configuration and transducers used. A well-chosen crossover point helps maintain a more uniform response and limits overload zones on the tweeter, while avoiding pushing the woofer/midrange too high.

6 dB/octave and 12 dB/octave Slopes: The Compromise Between Naturalness and Control

The XO-6 combines a 6 dB/octave high-pass slope with a 12 dB/octave low-pass slope. In practice, these slopes influence how the two ways overlap around the crossover point: resulting in a smooth transition with stronger attenuation on the woofer/midrange side at the upper frequencies. This behavior can contribute to a more stable sound and better control of the energy sent to the woofer/midrange section beyond its comfort zone, while maintaining a musically smooth transition.

Compatibility and Integration

With an 8 Ohm impedance, the XO-6 is designed for common speaker setups in sound reinforcement. Its 400 W power handling makes it suitable for systems requiring good durability under sustained use, provided that installation recommendations, wiring, and overall coherence (speakers, amplification, enclosure load, and ventilation) are respected. Its 142 x 107 mm size facilitates installation inside the speaker, minimizing space usage while remaining accessible for maintenance.
