A Bare Knuckle Classic: the first HSP90 (humbucker format) launched in 2005
The Mississippi Queen is a genuine single coil P90 mounted on a humbucker chassis: it was the first P90 in humbucker format developed by Bare Knuckle (2005), which over the years has become a benchmark for "HSP90" sounds. Adopted by guitarists from very different musical worlds, it helped popularize the idea of achieving a true P90 tone without modifying the instrument.
Who is the Mississippi Queen HSP90 for?
This set is designed for guitarists equipped with humbucker pickups who want more air, livelier mids, and more grain while maintaining solid foundation and power. It suits both solidbody and semi-hollow guitars, and remains relevant for barytons and guitars tuned lower.
In terms of styles, the Mississippi Queen covers a wide range: Blues, Country, Funk, Indie, Alternative, Hard Rock and can even go up to Metal depending on the amp and gain level.
The sound: muscular mids, solid lows, and breathing attack
The wide coil of a P90 delivers a thicker sound than a single coil like Strat or Tele, with a robust low end and singing highs. Where the Mississippi Queen stands out is in the midrange : you get the muscle of a humbucker but with a more open frequency response that lets notes breathe, ideal for riffs, pick and fingerstyle playing, and complex chords.
Clean tones yield a fat, earthy, and dynamic grain. When pushing the gain, the pickup retains definition and can become very aggressive, while remaining controllable thanks to a good dynamic range and a calibrated set for complete balance between neck and bridge.
